Tyres: Buying, Replacing and Staying Safe

How do I know when my tyres need replacing?

Your tyres may need replacing if the tread is low, wear is uneven, the sidewalls are cracked, there is a bulge, or the tyre has damage that cannot be safely repaired. We can inspect them and explain exactly what condition they are in.

What is the legal minimum tyre tread depth in the UK?

For cars and light vans, the legal minimum is 1.6mm across the central three-quarters of the tyre, around its full circumference.

Should I replace my tyres at 3mm or wait until they reach 1.6mm?

1.6mm is the legal minimum, but many tyre-safety experts recommend considering replacement at around 3mm. Wet-weather grip reduces as tread gets lower, so waiting until the tyre is right on the legal limit is not always the best option.

How do I check my tyre tread using a 20p coin?

Place a 20p coin into the main tread grooves. If you can see the outer rim of the coin, the tread may be too low and should be checked properly with a tread-depth gauge. Check several points across each tyre, not just one area.

How often should I check my tyre pressures and tread depth?

Check tyre pressures, tread depth and general condition at least once a month and before long journeys. You should also check after hitting a pothole or kerb.

How do I find the correct tyre size for my car?

Your tyre size is shown on the sidewall of your existing tyres and is usually listed in your vehicle handbook or on a sticker inside the driver’s door, fuel flap or glovebox. We can also check the correct size, load rating and speed rating for your vehicle.

Can I choose a different tyre brand from the one already fitted?

Yes. You do not have to fit the same brand, as long as the tyre is the correct size for your vehicle and matches the size fitted on the other side of the same axle. We will help you choose an option that suits your driving and budget.

What is the difference between budget, mid-range and premium tyres?

Budget tyres are the lower-cost option for everyday driving. Mid-range tyres often offer a balance between price, grip and mileage. Premium tyres are usually designed for stronger wet grip, handling, braking and longer-term performance.

Do tyres need to be replaced in pairs?

It is usually best to replace tyres in pairs on the same axle to keep grip and handling balanced. In some cases, replacing one tyre is possible, but we will advise you honestly based on the condition and type of tyre already fitted.

Should new tyres be fitted to the front or rear of the car?

New tyres can be fitted to either the front or rear axle. Some drivers prefer them on the front for steering, braking and drive traction, while others prefer them on the rear for stability in wet conditions. We will explain the options and fit them where you prefer, provided the tyres are suitable for the vehicle.

Is it safe to mix different tyre brands or tread patterns?

It can be safe where the tyres are the correct size and specification, but matching tyres on the same axle is always preferable. We would not recommend mixing tyre sizes or incompatible tyre types across the same axle.

Are tyres with sidewall cracks still safe to drive on?

Small surface marks may not always mean the tyre is unsafe, but cracks, cuts or perishing on a sidewall should never be ignored. Sidewalls carry a lot of stress, so we recommend having the tyre inspected before continuing to drive.

How old can tyres be before they should be replaced?

There is no single age where every tyre must automatically be replaced. Condition matters most. We check for cracking, hardening, tread condition, repairs, damage and signs of ageing before advising whether replacement is needed.

Are part-worn tyres safe to buy?

Part-worn tyres can be a lower-cost option when they are properly inspected and meet legal requirements. Every part-worn tyre we supply is inspected and pressure tested before fitting. If we would not fit it to our own car, we would not fit it to yours. We will explain the tyre’s tread depth, condition and price so you can decide what is right for your vehicle and budget.

Can incorrect tyre pressure cause uneven tyre wear or higher fuel use?

Yes. Under-inflated or over-inflated tyres can wear unevenly, affect handling, increase fuel use and reduce tyre life. Always use the pressure recommended by your vehicle manufacturer.

Punctures, Flat Tyres and Tyre Damage

Can a tyre with a nail or screw in it be repaired?

Possibly. It depends on where the damage is, the size of the hole, the tyre’s condition and whether it has been driven while flat. We inspect the tyre before advising whether a safe repair is possible.

Can I drive with a nail or screw stuck in my tyre?

Do not pull it out yourself. If the tyre is holding pressure, come straight to us for an inspection. If it is low or flat, use your spare wheel, tyre sealant if suitable, or arrange recovery rather than continuing to drive on it.

Can a slow puncture be repaired?

Often, yes. A slow loss of pressure may be caused by a small puncture, damaged valve, corroded wheel rim or poor seal between the tyre and wheel. We will identify the cause before recommending the right repair.

Why does my tyre keep losing pressure?

Common causes include a nail or screw, a leaking valve, rim corrosion, a damaged tyre, a previous poor repair or a leaking bead seal. A proper inspection is the best way to find the cause.

Can a puncture in the tyre sidewall be repaired?

No. Damage to the sidewall cannot normally be repaired safely because this area flexes heavily while driving. A sidewall puncture usually means the tyre will need replacing.

Can a puncture close to the edge of the tyre be repaired?

Usually not. Repairs are generally limited to the central repairable area of the tread. Damage near the shoulder or edge is normally too close to the sidewall to repair safely.

When is a tyre puncture unsafe to repair?

A tyre may need replacing if the damage is in the sidewall or shoulder, the hole is too large, there is internal damage, cords are exposed, the tyre has been driven flat, or the tread is already too low.

Do I need a new tyre if I have driven on it while it was flat?

Possibly. Driving on a flat or very low tyre can damage the inside of the sidewall, even when the outside looks acceptable. We will inspect it properly before confirming whether it can stay in service.

Can run-flat tyres be repaired?

Some run-flat tyres may be repairable, but it depends on the tyre manufacturer’s guidance, the damage and how far it was driven after losing pressure. Many run-flat tyres need replacing after a puncture.

Is tyre sealant a permanent repair?

No. Tyre sealant is usually a temporary emergency measure to help you get to a garage. A proper tyre inspection and internal repair, where suitable, is still needed.

What should I do if my tyre has a bulge or egg-shaped lump?

Do not ignore it. A bulge often means internal structural damage and can lead to sudden tyre failure. The tyre should be replaced as soon as possible.

Can a damaged tyre valve cause a slow puncture?

Yes. A leaking valve, valve core or TPMS valve can cause pressure loss. We inspect the valve and wheel area as part of finding the source of a slow puncture.

Can a tyre be repaired more than once?

It depends on the tyre’s condition, the location of the damage and any existing repairs. We assess every tyre individually and will only repair it where it is safe to do so.

Is a professionally repaired tyre safe for motorway driving?

Yes, where it has been repaired correctly and the tyre is otherwise in good condition with legal tread depth. A proper repair is very different from a temporary plug or sealant repair.

Why has my tyre pressure warning light come on but I cannot see a puncture?

It could be a slow puncture, temperature change, incorrect tyre pressures, a leaking valve or a TPMS sensor issue. Check your pressures manually and bring the vehicle in if the warning returns.

Wheel Alignment and Wheel Balancing

What is wheel alignment?

Wheel alignment is the adjustment of the angles of your wheels so they sit correctly on the road. Correct alignment helps your car steer properly and helps tyres wear evenly.

Is wheel alignment the same thing as tracking?

Tracking usually refers to adjusting the front toe angle. Wheel alignment can involve checking and adjusting more angles across the vehicle, especially with four-wheel alignment equipment.

What is the difference between wheel balancing and wheel alignment?

Wheel balancing corrects uneven weight around the wheel and tyre to reduce vibration. Wheel alignment adjusts the direction and angle of the wheels to improve steering, handling and tyre wear.

Do I need wheel alignment when fitting new tyres?

Not automatically, but it is worth checking if your old tyres wore unevenly, the car pulls to one side, the steering wheel is off-centre, or you have hit a pothole or kerb.

Should I get my alignment checked after hitting a pothole?

Yes. A pothole can knock the alignment out, damage a tyre, buckle a wheel or affect suspension parts. It is worth checking, especially if the car now pulls or vibrates.

Can hitting a kerb put my wheel alignment out?

Yes. Even a low-speed kerb impact can affect alignment, tyre condition, wheel balance or suspension components.

Why is my car pulling to the left or right?

Poor wheel alignment is one possible cause. Other causes include tyre pressures, uneven tyre wear, brake drag, road camber or suspension faults. We can inspect the vehicle and advise what is causing it.

Why is my steering wheel not straight when driving forward?

This is often a sign that the wheel alignment is out. It can happen after pothole damage, kerb contact or wear in steering and suspension components.

Can poor wheel alignment cause uneven tyre wear?

Yes. Incorrect alignment can wear out the inside, outside or edges of tyres much faster than normal. Sorting it early can help protect your tyres.

Can wheel alignment fix steering wheel vibration?

Not always. Alignment can improve pulling and uneven wear, but vibration at speed is more commonly caused by wheel balance, tyre damage, a bent wheel or worn suspension parts.

Why does my steering wheel shake at motorway speeds?

Common causes include an unbalanced wheel, damaged or unevenly worn tyres, a bent wheel or worn steering and suspension parts. If it only happens when braking, the brake discs may also need checking.

Does fitting a new tyre include wheel balancing?

Yes. Tyres are balanced as part of the fitting process to help prevent vibration through the steering wheel or vehicle.

How often should wheel alignment be checked?

Have it checked when you notice pulling, uneven tyre wear, an off-centre steering wheel, vibration, after pothole or kerb impact, or whenever you are concerned about handling.

What is the difference between front wheel alignment and four-wheel alignment?

Front wheel alignment checks and adjusts the front wheels. Four-wheel alignment measures all four wheels and is useful for vehicles where the rear alignment can affect steering, handling and tyre wear.

Can wheel alignment fix tyres that are already worn unevenly?

Alignment will prevent the problem from getting worse, but it cannot put tread back onto tyres that are already worn. Severely worn tyres may still need replacing.

Car Servicing and Maintenance

What is the difference between an interim service, full service and major service?

An interim service is usually a lighter maintenance visit for higher-mileage drivers. A full service includes more checks and maintenance. A major service is more comprehensive and may include additional items due at specific mileage or age intervals.

Is an MOT the same thing as a car service?

No. An MOT is a legal roadworthiness inspection on the day of the test. A service is planned maintenance to help keep the engine, brakes, fluids, filters and other components in good condition.

How often should I get my car serviced?

Follow the manufacturer’s service schedule for your vehicle. Many cars need servicing every 12 months or at a mileage interval, whichever comes first.

Does my car still need servicing if I do very low mileage?

Yes. Oil, brake fluid, filters and other components can deteriorate over time, even if the car has not covered many miles.

What is usually included in a full car service?

This depends on your vehicle and service schedule, but may include an oil and filter change, fluid checks, brake inspection, tyre checks, suspension checks and a range of safety inspections.

Is an oil and filter change the same as a full service?

No. An oil and filter change is an important part of many services, but a full service includes wider checks and may include additional maintenance items.

Can an independent garage service my car without affecting the manufacturer warranty?

Usually, yes. An independent garage can service a vehicle under warranty if it follows the manufacturer’s schedule, uses suitable parts and keeps proper records. Check any separate service-plan or warranty terms that apply to your vehicle.

Can I have my car serviced early?

Yes. Having a service early is not a problem and can be sensible before a long journey, sale, holiday or if the vehicle is overdue.

Does a car service reset the service light?

Where applicable, we reset the service indicator after completing the relevant service work. Some vehicles use more complex condition-based systems, so the exact process depends on the make and model.

Why does my car need an oil change if it is still driving fine?

Engine oil breaks down over time and collects contaminants. Fresh oil helps protect moving engine parts and can reduce wear, overheating and costly future repairs.

What can happen if I miss a scheduled service?

Missing services can increase engine wear, reduce reliability, affect resale value and potentially affect warranty cover. It can also allow smaller faults to become more expensive repairs.

Can a new car be serviced at an independent garage?

Yes, provided the correct service schedule and suitable parts are used. Keep all invoices and service records.

Do I need to bring my service book or service history with me?

Bring it where possible, especially if your car has a paper service book. It helps us check what has already been completed and update the history correctly.

How long does a car service usually take?

It depends on the vehicle and service level. Some services can be completed within a few hours, while larger services or extra repairs may take longer. We will give you an estimated timescale when you book.

Should I book a service before a long journey or holiday?

Yes. Booking in advance gives time to identify issues with tyres, brakes, fluids, lights or the battery before you travel.

MOTs, Advisories and MOT Failures

How do I check when my MOT is due?

You can check your MOT status and history online through the GOV.UK MOT service, or check the expiry date on your current MOT certificate.

What is the difference between an MOT and a vehicle service?

An MOT checks whether the vehicle meets minimum roadworthiness standards at the time of the test. A service is maintenance designed to help keep the vehicle running reliably and reduce wear.

How early can I get an MOT done?

You can have an MOT carried out up to one month minus one day before it expires and keep the same renewal date for the following year.

How long does an MOT take?

An MOT normally takes around 45 to 60 minutes, although this can vary depending on the vehicle and whether further checks are needed.

Can I drive my car to a pre-booked MOT if the MOT has expired?

Yes, you can drive to a pre-arranged MOT appointment or to and from repairs required for that test. The vehicle must still be roadworthy.

Can I drive my car after it has failed its MOT?

It depends. You can take it away if the current MOT is still valid and there are no dangerous defects listed. The vehicle must remain roadworthy at all times.

What is an MOT advisory?

An advisory means something did not fail the MOT but may need monitoring, maintenance or repair in the future. It is worth dealing with advisories before they become bigger problems.

Do I have to fix MOT advisories straight away?

Not always, but you should not ignore them. Your car must remain roadworthy, even after it has passed an MOT, and some advisories can worsen quickly.

What are the most common reasons cars fail an MOT?

Common problems include tyres, brakes, lights, suspension components, emissions-related faults, windscreen wipers and steering issues.

Can worn tyres cause an MOT failure?

Yes. Tyres can fail an MOT if the tread is below the legal limit, there is dangerous damage, cords are exposed, there is a significant bulge, or the tyre is otherwise unsafe.

Will an engine warning light cause an MOT failure?

An emissions-related engine management light that shows a fault can result in an MOT fail. We can diagnose the fault before or after the MOT and advise what needs attention.

Will a tyre pressure warning light cause an MOT failure?

On eligible vehicles, the TPMS warning lamp is checked. A clear system malfunction can result in a failure, while a low-pressure warning may be recorded differently depending on the fault shown.

Is air conditioning checked during an MOT?

No. Whether the air conditioning blows cold is not part of the standard MOT test. Air conditioning should be checked separately as part of regular maintenance.

Can I book an MOT and service for the same day?

Yes, subject to availability. Booking them together can be convenient because any maintenance issues can be discussed at the same time.

Can I appeal an MOT result if I think it is wrong?

Yes. You can appeal an MOT fail within 14 working days. Appeals against a pass have different deadlines, including 28 calendar days for most issues and three months for corrosion-related concerns.

Brakes, Suspension and Mechanical Repairs

How do I know when my brake pads need replacing?

Common signs include squealing, grinding, longer stopping distances, a brake warning light, vibration, pulling when braking or a brake pedal that feels different.

Do brake pads and brake discs need replacing at the same time?

Not always. Brake pads can sometimes be replaced on their own, but discs may also need replacing if they are worn, damaged, corroded, below specification or causing vibration.

Why are my brakes squealing?

Squealing can be caused by worn pads, brake dust, surface rust, glazed pads or certain pad materials. It does not always mean immediate danger, but it should be checked.

Why are my brakes making a grinding noise?

Grinding can mean the brake pads are worn down to metal and may already be damaging the discs. Book an inspection as soon as possible and avoid unnecessary driving.

Why does my steering wheel shake when I brake?

This may be caused by worn or uneven brake discs, but it can also be linked to tyre, wheel, steering or suspension issues. We can inspect the braking system and identify the cause.

Why does my car pull to one side when braking?

Possible causes include a sticking brake caliper, uneven brake wear, tyre issues, wheel alignment or suspension faults. It should be inspected because it can affect safe braking.

Is it normal for brake discs to develop surface rust?

A light layer of surface rust can appear when the car has been parked, especially in damp weather. It often clears after normal braking.

Do rusty brake discs need replacing?

Not always. Light surface rust can be normal, but heavy corrosion, pitting, cracking, lipping or reduced disc thickness may mean replacement is needed.

Why does my brake pedal feel soft or spongy?

A soft or spongy pedal can indicate air in the braking system, low brake fluid, a leak or another brake-system issue. Do not ignore it. Arrange an inspection promptly.

Can I drive with a brake warning light on?

A brake warning light can indicate a serious problem, including low brake fluid or a brake-system fault. Stop safely when possible and have the vehicle checked before continuing to drive.

How often should brake fluid be changed?

Follow your manufacturer’s recommended interval. Many vehicles recommend brake-fluid changes around every two years, but the correct interval varies by make and model.

Can worn suspension parts cause uneven tyre wear?

Yes. Worn suspension and steering components can affect wheel position and alignment, causing tyres to wear unevenly.

Why does my car make a clunking noise over bumps?

It could be caused by worn drop links, bushes, ball joints, suspension arms, shock absorbers, springs or other components. A proper inspection is needed to identify it accurately.

Can a pothole damage my suspension, tyres or wheel alignment?

Yes. Potholes can damage tyres, wheels, suspension components and alignment. Have the vehicle checked if you notice pulling, vibration, noises or visible tyre damage.

Should shock absorbers, springs or suspension parts be replaced in pairs?

Shock absorbers are normally replaced in pairs on the same axle. Springs are often best replaced as a pair too, especially where the opposite side is old or corroded. The best option depends on the vehicle’s condition.

Car Air Conditioning

Why is my car air conditioning not blowing cold air?

Possible causes include low refrigerant, a leak, compressor issues, electrical faults, a damaged condenser, blocked components or a problem with the cabin filter.

Does my air conditioning just need a regas, or could it be another fault?

A regas only helps if the system is low on refrigerant. If there is a leak or mechanical fault, it may need repair rather than simply more gas.

Do you check for leaks before carrying out an air conditioning regas?

Yes. Our machine carries out a vacuum and pressure test before recharging. If it identifies a failed test, the regas will not continue. Please note that we carry out pressure testing and regassing, but we do not diagnose or repair air conditioning leaks.

Why has my air conditioning stopped working again after a regas?

It may have a refrigerant leak or a fault with another component, such as the compressor, condenser, pipework, fan or electrical system. A regas does not repair leaks or faulty components.

How often should car air conditioning be serviced or recharged?

Many systems benefit from a regas around every one to two years, although the correct interval can vary by vehicle and how often it is used.

What is the difference between R134a and R1234yf air conditioning gas?

They are different refrigerants used in different vehicle systems. Your vehicle must be charged with the exact gas specified by its manufacturer.

How do I know which air conditioning gas my car needs?

There is usually a label under the bonnet showing the refrigerant type and amount required. We can also check this before carrying out a regas.

Why does my car air conditioning smell bad?

Bad smells are often caused by bacteria, moisture or debris around the evaporator or cabin filter. A cabin-filter replacement and air-conditioning clean can often help.

Should I use my car air conditioning during winter?

Yes. Using air conditioning during winter can help clear misted windows and keeps the system running regularly. It is useful alongside your heater when demisting.

Why does my air conditioning make a hissing or gurgling noise?

A brief noise can sometimes be normal, but a constant or new noise may indicate low refrigerant, pressure issues or a component fault. It is worth having it checked.

Why does my air conditioning make a loud noise when switched on?

A loud noise may be caused by the compressor, cooling fan, drive belt, bearings or another component. A regas alone may not solve it.

Does using air conditioning increase fuel consumption?

Yes, air conditioning places extra load on the engine or battery system, so it can slightly increase fuel use. The difference depends on the vehicle, weather and how the system is used.

How long does an air conditioning regas take?

Most regas appointments take around 45 to 60 minutes, depending on the vehicle and whether the initial machine test passes.

Can I regas my car air conditioning myself with a DIY can?

We do not recommend it. Modern air-conditioning systems need the correct refrigerant, exact charge amount and professional recovery equipment. A DIY kit can overfill the system, use the wrong gas or fail to identify an underlying fault.

What is the difference between an air conditioning service and an air conditioning regas?

A regas involves recovering the existing refrigerant, testing the system and refilling it with the correct amount of gas. A broader air-conditioning service may also involve cleaning, cabin-filter checks and further performance checks.
